Fed: ARM elections go into cyberspace
The Australian Republican Movement has gone into cyberspace in its search for a new leader.
After losing the national vote on the republic last year, the movement is electing
a new leadership team to take the campaign for an Australian head of state into the new
century.
And in a new first, it will hold its election for the national and state-based committees
on the Internet.
A total of 144 candidates have nominated for 93 positions on the national, state and
territory committees.
High profile republicans including founding president MALCOLM TURNBULL, churchman TIM
COSTELLO, entertainer RICHARD FIDLER and young republican JASON YAT-SEN LI have all nominated
for the national committee.
Also nominating are former New South Wales Opposition Leader PETER COLLINS and Labor
Senator CHRIS SCHACHT.
The election results will be known soon after voting closes on September 1.
