Tests Cast Doubt on Chemical Find in Iraq

BAIJI, Iraq (AP) _ A metal drum found in northern Iraq that initially tested positive for nerve and blister agents might instead contain rocket fuel, according to new tests, a U.S. chemical weapons expert said Monday. More tests were planned in the coming days on the 55-gallon drum, said Lt. Col. Valentin Novikov, the chief chemical weapons officer of the 4th Infantry Division, the unit which found the site.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) _ Delegates from inside and outside Iraq agreed Monday to hold a nation-building meeting next month and fashion a temporary, post-Saddam Hussein government that the United States predicted could be in place within days after that. Iraq's new American administrators, charting the future of the land they invaded, secured the pledge to meet again in May from a multiethnic assortment of delegates. It represents the first specific timetable for trying to assemble the foundations of democracy in postwar Iraq and a more secure tomorrow.
Powell: N. Korea Will Disarm for U.S. Aid

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The United States is reviewing a North Korean proposal to give up the nation's missiles and nuclear facilities in exchange for substantial U.S. economic benefits, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Monday. The North Koreans set forth the proposal last week in talks in Beijing that were focused on U.S. concerns about North Korea's weapons programs.
Last Soldier Missing in Iraq Found Dead

LOS FRESNOS, Texas (AP) _ The body of a soldier found the day after a convoy was ambushed in southern Iraq was identified as Army Spc. Edward John Anguiano, the last missing soldier in Iraq, the Pentagon said Monday. Officials used DNA tests to confirm that the remains were Anguiano, according to the soldier's grandfather, and military officials notified the family late Sunday. The grandfather said he believed Anguiano was killed during the initial attack on March 23, when he disappeared.
Officials: Aziz Claimed Seeing Saddam

WASHINGTON (AP) _ U.S. government officials say Tariq Aziz has claimed he saw Iraqi President Saddam Hussein alive in early April. But Aziz's claim does not necessarily include the period after the second air strike on April 7.
Canada to Boost Airport SARS Screening

TORONTO (AP) _ Canada said Monday it would increase SARS screening procedures at airports and was sending a delegation to Geneva to try to persuade the World Health Organization to lift a warning against travel to Toronto. Federal Health Minister Anne McLellan said the government was looking at a variety of measures, including infrared technology that can detect fever, to check international passengers for severe acute respiratory syndrome.

NEW YORK (AP) _ Wall Street got the economic and earnings news it's been so desperate to hear Monday, and stocks responded by barreling higher, lifting the Dow Jones industrials more than 160 points. Encouraging consumer spending and income figures and better-than-expected earnings from McDonald's fed the market's rebounding confidence. Analysts reported a shift in investors' thinking, making many of them more concerned about missing out on a rally than they are about stocks' short-term vulnerability.
Apple Launching New Music Store Service

Burn" ad campaign, Apple Computer Inc. has won its cooperation in creating the Internet's least restrictive commercial music service yet. The iTunes Music Store announced by Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Monday draws from all five major labels in offering more than 200,000 songs at 99 cents a download _ and includes some big name artists who previously shunned online distribution.
Vandross Contracts Pneumonia After Stroke

NEW YORK (AP) _ Luther Vandross contracted pneumonia after suffering a stroke and had to undergo a tracheotomy to help him breathe, but the procedure didn't damage his vocal chords, his representatives said Monday. The Grammy-winning singer remains in critical but stable condition, and spokeswoman Lois Najarian told The Associated Press: "We expected him to be out of intensive care right now."
Spurs' Popovich Is NBA Coach of the Year

SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ Gregg Popovich won the NBA Coach of the Year award Monday for leading the San Antonio Spurs to the league's best record. Popovich, the first Spurs coach to win the award, received 40 out of a possible 121 first-place votes from a panel of sports writers and broadcasters.
